Mifsud Bonnici underlines Malta's condition for hosting Frontex
Video: Paul Spiteri Lucas
Malta is continuing to insist that it will not host any Frontex operation that places it in a worse position than it currently is in, Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said today.
He was referring to a dispute which erupted last year when it was decided that migrants rescued on the high seas by Frontex would be taken to the host country, rather than the nearest safe harbour.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici was speaking after talks in Malta with the Director-General of Frontex, Ilkka Laitinen. The talks focused on the feared exodus of migrants from Libya because of the upheaval there.
Mr Laitinen refused to be drawn into how big the exodus might be but said his organisation was drawing up plans for seven scenarios of possible migration flows.
Operations, he said, could include strengthening air and maritime surveillance, increased capacity to deal with those seeking protection at ports and airports and an improved repatriation mechanism for those who did not meet the criteria for humanitarian protection.
He insisted, however, that "push backs and diversions are not an option for people seeking protection". (Italy had agreed with Libya to immediately repatriate migrants found at sea, in what became known as the push back policy).
Asked several times about his estimation of the potential size of a migration flow, he said that was a 'billion dollar question."
He pointed that an international organisation (not Frontex) had said there were between 500,000 and 1.5 million third country nationals in Libya. There had also been some reports of some migration flows back to sub-saharan Africa.
Mr Laitinen did not wish to discuss issues relating to burden sharing, saying that was a political issue.

If there was a big flop in the 21st century to-date was the Frontex. What this gentleman is saying is all nonsense and rubbish. In English we say `talking rubbish`. The EU and the Frontex were incompetent to handle the massive migration from Africa to Europe. The following PMs all went to Libya to give Gaddafi a big hug under the tent to show him how much they love him, and now are turning their guns to Gaddafi: Gonzi who heads the Malta Regime, Berlusconi- the most sexy Italian girls idol; Mr Cameron who heads a coalition government and other EU officials They went under the tent with the specific intiontion to show Gaddafi how much they love him and how much their hearts is filled with warmth. If it were not for Gaddafi and Gaddafi alone both we and the Italians are still experiencing the migration of Arabs from Africa.

To see for yourselves how inefficient, mixed up and undelivering Frontex and its Director General Mr Laitinen are visit
http://www.isnrabudhabi.com/speakers.aspx?speakerId=32
This man resides in Finland and is a Finn. Wonder how he ended up Frontex's Director General?
Can anyone explain please?
Can the E.U. really expect Frontex to act in the interest of the European Union seeing that it is in the hands of somebody from Finland? Do they have problems with illegal immigration thereabouts?
Minister C. Mifsud Bonnici is well advised to put NATIONAL interests first and foremost at all times.

It is stating the obvious that all of Malta is behind the Hon. Minister position.
What is very disappointing in all this is the sadly predictable position of the EU, which, as always, is to abandon the southern European states (actually it offers some 'pretend' help, so as to seem it is doing something) when the issue of mass illegal migration rears its head.

Nispera li jekk jigu Malta influs kbir ta' immigranti ma jittiehdux il-fingerprint taghhom bhal ma qed isir u jintbaghtu Dublin biex kif jinstabu fl-Ewropa jintbaghtu lura Malta. Din tahdem biss kontra Malta. l-Italja hemm min jghid li hafna ma jittiehdulhomx l-istess il-Grecja jitfu hafna linka biex ma jittiehdux tajjeb. I'm grateful to see our Ministers putting us and our country first and foremost. A just means to everyone's satisfaction is called for and nothing less. Malta can only do so much. Now is the time to listen to our own pleas: put politics aside and reason. If the major political parties can do, surely so can we.

Malta must not give in to any pressure. Frontex will only bring the immigrants here and we know what happens then. Nitqannaw bihom. No, and no we must not take any more immigrants, we already have more than enough.

Maria Gauci , taking food out of our children is an expretion ,(( have you hear of it before )) and for your information there is still some kind of poverty in Malta so charity should start at home , you dont see all the Maltese chi;dren in disigner shoes and cloths
yet most of the illegals even own €450 mobile .
Why should we pay for illegal imigrants pretending to be ill treated in thier countries when it is bringing misery to alot people as we can see what is really happening .
The question here is not regarding obesity in Malta it is about frontext trying to stitch us up with more people in our country .we should be alert about frontex they bring it to Malta we end up with all the immigrants and once here we will never rest.
The frontex is putting Malta in this situation , Illegals know the system .As soon a boat approch Malta they should be taken back straight away not trying and satlling them , If they wish to live in another country they should upply for visa like everybody else.

It is beneficial to the Maltese to have foreigners on the Island, it contributed to fostering a multicultural environment .. this in turn will hopefully break the racist and xenophobic mentality of the Maltese and allow our children to share the bread!!

Director-General of Frontex, Ilkka Laitinen. Keep the money sort the illegals out of our ISLAND OF MALTA , We dont want them here wether they are black ,yellow, brown or white
They are taking food out of our children's mouth. if you want to see where they are spending the money they are given , go into most of the lotto shops / you find them gambling it , yet my children have to go without.

When the going got tough .... our tough got going.
I have backed Premier Lawrence Gonzi and Minister Tonio Borg since 2004 - for their succesful leadership bids. And feel even mor comfortable today in my humble and minimal contribution to my country.
And leadership is what they have shown.
Can you ust imagine two differnt scenarios , in this international scenario - which may explode at any moment. Just on our doorstep.
Malta not being a member of EU - would we have been able to take such a stand.
And if Alfred Sant's bid for Premiership was succesful in 2008.
I don't even dare to imagine where Malta would be in this crisis - with the above two sceanrios in place.

Here is an example of how the blatant lies told by illegal immigrants to raise sympathy and be allowed to stay has been blown by the BBC and the International Organization for Migrational (IOM)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12307698
• 1328: Ms Eyster said Egypt and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are arranging boats to collect Egyptian nationals, while some 130 Somalis will be flown home on a chartered plane.
Does anyone think that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) would have flown them home if they were in any danger?
They are in no danger and they only tell a pack of lies to get the peoples sympathy.
All their lies have been blown today by this BBC post and by the IOM flying them back home.
Time to wake up people and not be taken in again by the illegal immigrants blatant lies and send back all the illegal immigrants.
Laitinen PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS AND TAKE THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS TO YOUR OWN COUNTRY BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT THEM HERE. OTHERWISE SEND THEM BACK TO THEIR OWN COUNTRIES FORTHWITH THEY ARE PICKED UP.

Frontex must do its duty to Europe. Frontex must turn itself into a robust coastguard ready and able to push back the boats which try to enter illegally. Otherwise it continues to be a ferry service between North Africa and southern Europe. Europe is being invaded. Frontex must help to defend us.

As we are witnessing presently, in the absence of human traffickers/smugglers, people move towards the borders where they receive assistance and due procedure, even if in a limited way owing to the sheer numbers involved.
It's when human traffickers/smugglers move in and establish themselves to carry out their criminal activities that we start seeing illegal boats appearing. Frontex wants to continue to condone this practice, but in doing so, Frontex should leave the Maltese government alone. Malta will continue to help people and their respective governments within its own capacity. There is simply an economic limit on how much one can help.

In my opinion we should not take part . Frontex is just a taxi service . Malta should be free to decide when and if it cannot take anymore illegal immigrants . The EU has shown time and time again that it does not have our interest at heart - It cannot , not when these conflict with the interests of other much larger member states
Mr Laitinen's comments are clear - once you are part of Frontex you will be forced to take the immigrants , now whether its the host country or just to the closest port of call , having all those ships patrolling the area , only increases the chances of having migrants picked up close to our shore
