There was an increase in the number of nights tourists and Maltese nationals spent in hotels in December compared to the same month last year, official statistics show.

About 74,900 people stayed at hotels, a rise of 14 per cent over the same period in 2009. The total number of nights grew by 6.4 per cent to about 335,000, the National Statistics Office said. Last December, over 57,900 foreigners arrived in Malta spending about 302,800 nights here.

Four-star hotels registered the largest increases in arrivals – 33,647 – and bed nights –155,617, the statistics office said.

Almost all hotel categories recorded higher occupancy rate, while other forms of accommodation, with the exception of guesthouses, registered slight drops.
