During a morning programme on Radju Malta’s Familja Waħda, ably produced and presented by Lilian Maistrè, the deputy mayor of Żejtun, Joan Agius, agreed that the state of certain pavements in the village needs to be looked into. She also said the local council is against the way some of the pavements have been built to date to accommodate garage owners. I agree with her completely. It is very inconvenient and irritating to have to walk on pavements which look more like fdewwex (the pasta which used to be on the market some years ago).

These pavements are dangerous, especially for people of a certain age, for those who have to use a wheelchair or push a buggy. In short, for all of us ordinary citizens who rightly believe that pavements should be level. The deputy mayor said the Żejtun local council will be building pavements with a slanting edge, which they call kurduna, in front of garage doorways. This system, while accommodating garage owners, will be safe to walk on.

Let us hope other councils will follow suit.
