In Oliver Lansley’s comedy Immaculate – being produced by Theatre Anon at St James Cavalier, Valletta, in March – the unexpected pregnancy faced by Mia, the protagonist, quickly spirals into farcical confusion when she finds she has to deal with no fewer than three potential fathers.

Mia is a modern, independent woman, with a successful career – she is a professional mistress. Granted, that career may be a tad unorthodox, but it pays the rent and she is good at it.

She was in a relationship with Michael, but things didn’t quite work out, and she is happy to be single and celibate for a while. That she is therefore pregnant comes as a bit of a surprise.

That surprise is nothing compared to the puzzlement she feels when the Angel Gabriel turns up on her doorstep, followed closely by Lucifer, both expressing interest in her unborn child.

Michael also turns up demanding to know what is going on. The hapless Mia has no idea.

Immaculate is an irreverent and funny play whose plot unfolds with a dose of humour and story-telling.

It proves to be a change of scene for Theatre Anon. Following the success they had with Ospizio last summer, the company has opted for this mainstream comedy, which garnered a huge following after its successful debut at the 2006 Edinburgh Festival.

Immaculate is directed by Polly March and the cast includes Stefan Cachia Zammit, Charlotte Grech, Alan Montanaro, Denise Mulholland, Alan Paris and Paul Portelli.

Performances of Immaculate will take place at St James Cavalier, Valletta, from March 11 to 13, and 18 to 20, at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale at €15, except those for the March 11 show, which cost €12.

Booking is from St James Cavalier, on 2122 3200 or e-mail boxoffice@sjcav.org.

Immaculate is rated 18. For further information visit www.theatreanon.com.
