Karl Izzo has been appointed as the new head coach of San Ġiljan ASC, it was announced yesterday.

Izzo, who last season was at the helm of Sirens, has signed a two-year contract and succeeds Italian coach Marco Risso who was not retained by the Saints.

For Izzo this will be his second stint with San Ġiljan as in 2009 he was Risso’s no. 2.

In a statement, the club said: “Karl Izzo brings his knowledge of the game, experience and enthusiasm to San Ġiljan and the club is looking forward to the upcoming season with confidence that good results will be obtained to further consolidate the club’s position among the elite of local waterpolo.”

It was also revealed that the club had opted not to renew the contract of Claudio Spiteri De Barro who has agreed to move to Marsascala. Also heading south are Matthew Pace and Ranier Scerri on a loan deal.

Anthony Galea has returned to San Ġiljan while the club have also signed Liam Grixti (loan) and Kai Dowling from Marsascala.

Paul Fava has been appointed as the new team captain.

The 2011 Winter League starts next month. San Ġiljan open up against Neptunes on March 5.
