Witness describes scene in Tripoli
Demo in Valletta planned
Adel Fituris, a Libyan man who lives in Malta with his family, described the scene in Libya to anti-Gaddafi protesters yesterday after returning to Libya on Tuesday.
He said that mercenaries in Tripoli were shooting people at random. He insisted it was not Libyans shooting at Libyans.
(See video above)
Meanwhile, after three days of protests outside the Libyan embassy, the anti-Gaddafi protesters said they are planning a big demonstration in Valletta on Saturday. They called on the Maltese to join them in an expression of solidarity and condemnation of the violence in Libya.
One young PhD holder said the Maltese should stop being afraid of Col Gaddafi and not fear an influx of illegal immigration if he fell .
"If Libya becomes democratic, like Egypt and Tunisia, we can turn North Africa into a very prosperous region . We have so many resources, everyone will be happy. I think if Gaddafi falls, we can have immigration into Libya not out of it . Why would people continue leaving Libya to go to Europe where there is financial turmoil when they can stay and rebuild a developing country full of opportunities?”

As an aside but still relevant....
Not so long ago Gaddafi was inviting 'beautiful' Italian women to parties (and, if I'm not mistaken, they remarked that they weren't offered not even a glass of water). The whole purpose was to indoctrinate them and some did indeed convert to Islam. In view of the events as they are unfolding now, I wonder what these women think of their one-time host?

Alleluliah! Alleluliah! The Government and the Opposition of Malta are finally ONE and neutral! So be it! While innocent people, including women, children and senior citizens of Libya are being butchered by brutal mercenaries! To hell with principles and with our politicians whose brazen cowardice knows no ends! This is Malta today, an island lost in the mists of shame! A second George Cross to the rescue to add to our national flag!

Goivernment and Opposition are behaving with responsabilty, caution and wisdom in this crisis. The Maltese people must follow this example.
We do not know the real motives of hese Libyans in Malta. They may have genuine greivances. However I assure the Maltese that not all of them are innoccent.
. In Malta we have Libyans , Syrians an Egyptians who came here to ditch their duty to serve in the army.
They are bitter against their Governments because they know, that if they go back, they will end up in jail because they shirked their responsability. Even if one is an Israeli and ditches conscription, he ends up in jail.
We are not afraid of Ghadafi. When in the 7O's Ghadafi played rough with us we stood our ground. However let us not get carried away. This crises has put enough crosses of our back. . Before we shake a hand we must see it open.

axuereb, we have a very wrong impression of Libya and its people. I have personally lived in Tripoli for the past 1 year and I must tell you that Libya is an amazing country. It is so beautiful and the people are very good, kind hearted and always ready to help each other. Family and Religious values are still a priority in Libya, Something that the Western world is slowly loosing. It is the government that has deprived them of basic human rights, good education and reliable medical assistance and hospitals. May they finally have what should have been theirs a long time ago.

What makes this Ph D holder think that we are afraid of Gaddafi ??
We are MALTESE and scared from no one, only we take time and apply
democracy to solve any problems patiently , but surely not out of fear. He is
short changed of MALTESE history.
No Maltese run away from MALTA to the sancuary of otheres when there disagreement between us.
We let him demostrate in MALTA due democracy but SURELY not out of fear

Speak for yourself please. If you insist that if Gaddafi starts sending fighter jets and/or attacking Malta you will stay here then be my guest. I know I'd be going off somewhere for safety. I want to migrate to Australia anyways so I'd be fine if at least i get somewhere in the EU for the time being.
If you're thinking of a David vs Goliath scenario, please keep in mind that in those days they didn't have fighter jets or bullets.

It is too early to say what will become of Libya. So these comments are merely knee-jerk reactions.
@ R.Ferriggi. I hear what you're saying. But what comes across is, I wish you luck Libya/Libyans BUT STAY OUT OF MY COUNTRY. Allah! Allah! one Libyan waxes lyrical about his country's rosy future and already some Maltese are shouting 'we've always been friends, we understand you, you have our support, let's present a united front'. Yes, until the next time. The Maltese are famous for the blah blah and their knee-jerks. The good-hearted Maltese Mr. Ferriggi are also the gullible ones. They remind me of weather-vanes. This because opinions are based on superficialities which, as such, are easily thwarted and changed 'according to the prevailing wind'.

may i add to my comment:
i am ashamed, disgusted and more at this minority of maltese persons who have and are showing insensitive if not hateful comments about ANY OTHER people.
we all have fears of being inundated with immigarants or refugees but the fear of xenophobia and egosim is much much worse.
every human being's DUTY is to assit other human beings in need. no questions asked.

I think if Gaddafi falls, we can have immigration into Libya not out of it... I wonder if it really happens how many libyans living in malta will actually return to their homeland once they have been accustomed to living in a western country., especially those with a maltese wife!

Mr.Xuereb, I ask you to be realistic about the immigration issue. With the existing lawlessness and lack of infrastructure and disorder, people in Libya would for sure prefer to leave their homeland and come over to Europe, as it will take several years to sort out the mess the country is currently in, and with all the divided factions / tribes that exist (there is a big difference between being opposed to Gaddafi to being politically stable, etc..) Libyans would be better off being ruled by a 'dictator' willing to drastically reform the country with a pre-agreed agenda including the passing on of authority to an eventual democratically elected government, than trying to go for democracy right now. Just look at what happened in Iraq with the fall of Saddam Hussein. If the Americans were not there to intervene after his fall, they would have had civil war. And there is still the possibility of this occurring if the Americans withdraw as planned.

I think this person is right. Libya can be the most beautiful place in the mediterrenean and if democracy prevails it would be a land of opportunities. One think which Libyans must understand is that Maltese people have always been close to them and they should never abondon us and forget what Malta has done for them. And although we are a tiny island we are the only EU member that can understand the culture and really help out.

i am a maltese citizen through and through.
we ( the peace-loving, good-hearted) maltese people assure the libyan people that our thoughts and fears are with them in these dark moments in their history.
of course,,,, there are the minority of xeno phobic, egositic, secion of our population,,,, as all countries have in their ranks. (( these maltese think that malta is the heaven on earth,,, the purest race of the universe - i am sorry to say ,,, far from it!!))
but the majority of the maltese people would love to have a strong solid DEMOCRATIC NATION such as LIBYA CAN BE.
we wish the libyan people all the best for their future and their children.
