About €6,000 in cash and cheques were stolen from a Sta Venera lotto booth by two hooded men, armed with a shotgun, who fired a warning shot before making off with the money yesterday.

The thieves walked into the booth in St Joseph Road, Sta Venera at about 11.30 a.m., the police said. They asked the lotto attendant for money, firing a shot at the ceiling but injuring nobody, police sources added.

The attendant handed over the money, which amounted to about €3,000 in cash and €3,000 worth of cheques, and the intruders escaped in a stolen vehicle. Magistrate Gabrielle Vella appointed experts to help in an inquiry.
