The White House yesterday offered its condolences to the victims of “appalling violence” during the crackdown on protesters in Libya, President Barack Obama’s spokesman said.

“We offer our condolences to the families of the victims of Libya and this appalling violence,” spokesman Jay Carney told reporters, reiterating US condemnation of the crackdown.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called on Libya to end “unacceptable bloodshed” and said Washington was working urgently with its partners to make its message clear to Col. Gaddafi’s teetering government.
