The proposal to carry out a study to build a tunnel linking the two islands has been welcomed by the Gozo Regional Committee within the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development.
The idea of building an underwater tunnel was recently rekindled by Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said and Transport Malta will be conducting a detailed study to provide a clear picture of the situation.
This was welcomed by the Gozo parish priests and the business community. A tunnel would address the issue of Gozo’s inherent handicap compared to the mainland, namely double insularity and accessibility, which were hindering the island’s competitiveness and struggle towards economic survival and development, the committee said.
