Frattini expects migrants wave 'of biblical proportions'
The European Union this morning predictably suspended talks with Libya on a cooperation agreement.
An urgent meeting of the Political and Security Committee (PSC) is due to be held this afternoon to discuss possible further actions against Libya.
A spokesman for the Commission told The Times that “possible sanctions will be discussed” and that all the 27 member states “are encouraged to come up with concrete proposals” on the way forward.
The College of Commissioners this morning discussed the unfolding events in Libya and called upon Colonel Gaddafi to stop the violence and start talking to the people.
According to a Commission spokesman “the threats to his own people are not acceptable.”
Meanwhile, Home Affairs Ministers from southern European states are meeting in Rome to discuss the possible influx of migrants.
Italian Minister Franco Frattini said an influx of migrants of 'biblical proportions' was feared, with as many as 300,000 migrants crossing over to Europe.

Why is everyone making a political issue out of this?! Forget Muscat and Gonzi and get down to earth and realise what will happen to us if only just 1% of these immigrants were to come here???
Can you imagine what repercussions that will have?!!!! Does anyone know the size of the police force and military here?? Look that up and you will be amazed to know that together it is not even a few thousand people. We are already overwhelmed with these illegal immigrants and the last thing we need is more of them.
I do agree that you have to help these poor people but at the end of the day you help as you can without jeopardising your own conditions. I do not think that this is rocket science, just common sense.
So the question is.... What are we going to do in the eventuality that there is this influx?
So please both of you MUSCAT AND GONZI get your acts together and for once collaborate with each other and come up with a plan in case this event is to really occur.

Sounds more like Koran proportions than Biblical.

I find Frattini’s comment unfounded. Libya’s GDP is $18,000 per capita.People would never flee a rich country for ever.
I would say Frattinni is backing his bosom buddy Gaddafi with his comment. That’s all this man could do to help his brother.

Wonder what reception one could expect if the roles where reversed?
100s of 1000s of Christians fleeing to a Muslim,Islamic country?

The Maltese people are worried, and rightly so.
An influx of 1000s of asylum seekers,(Illegal immigrants) from North Africa,to the tiny Island of Malta, will have devastating repercussions.
Where do you suggest they are housed,on this tiny over populated Island?
Not only will the economic situation suffer in Malta, but the Maltese main source of income, the tourist industry

@ all, IMMA POSSIBBLI L-INTERESSI TAL-MALTIN, IL-PREZZ TAZ-ZEJT U T-TURIZMU AKTAR IMPORTANTI MID-DMIJA FIT-TOROQ GHALIKOM?????????????????????
Mr. Holme, some of us Maltese actually put certain things way second to human bloodshed. Is it possible to simply understand this and put fuel prices and tourism second to human life for a change! Our politicians have colluded enough with this regime, the least we can do is contribute our fair share to the humanitarian crisis we helped create.

@ A.Mifsud and E. Gatt. I never realised how much you have lost faith in your leader. You are today turning to Dr. Muscat in opposition to take over this question. Ha Ha you have really turned desperate. Poor Malta If anything like what is happened to our neighbours ( god forbids) happens here I am today realising that Il-Hdura politika li irnexxielu il- partit Nazzjonalista ikattar f, dawn l-ahhar 24 sena f' pajjizna mhux gwerra civili iggib izda genocidju tar- razza Maltija. You call yourself Maltese Christians? Why don't you thank your lucky stars that you are here and not there.Guess if you would have been there anything would have been fine for you as long as you get on any vessel - even an immigrants' boat to come to Malta, or to Italy or to the safest port. So just shut up and keep your idiotic rhetoric to yourselves. Now is not the time neither to goad politicians, who are being extremely careful, and neither to create panic. Just hope for the best without being too idiotic. For sure if right now I'd be in the vicinity of one of those places where there is violence,I would put my best leg forward and get out of there & go to any country, by fair means or foul where at least for the time being i would be safe.In all your wisdom do you know that the right of survival is the same for one and all?????

So what's your point? Are you arguing we shouldn't be prepared?
What if 10% of those 350,000 land in Malta, which is entirely possible? What if the 350,000 turns out to be more like 1m or 3m people eventually?
My guess is that it will eventually be much higher. 350,000 could be the initial wave of Libyan refugees but if the country devolves into anarchy, think about all the Africans who would use it as Africa's easy unmonitored way to Europe...

Sig. Frattini: In 2002, Brigadier David Richards (now UK Chief of the Defense Staff) acting on a hunch, turned a simple evacuation operation in Sierra Leone into an historic political reversal.
I am certain that should NATO offer to secure the peace by making a Rapid Reaction Force detachment available (suitably backed by the United Nations / African Union / Arab League), the entire Libyan security apparatus would disintegrate very quickly.
The risk of escalation in this case may be less damaging than the instability of an exodus of biblical proportions. It would also serve to tangibly unify, what has so far remained an academic exercise with an associated and unacceptable human cost.

If what Frattini has stated comes to a grave reality, may I ask our Governemnt what preperations are being made to put our minds at peace?
What shall the Govt do if just 5% of 300,000 come to Malta?

If only 1% of these 'feared' numbers of refugees decide to take the Malta route (which I'm sure they will) it would be catastrophic Malta.
Or perhaps we could exploit the situation as Mr. Muscat had suggested? Having made it absolutely clear to Italy already, the EU said that Italy (ie Malta too) is geared to accommodate the influx of thousands of immigrants. I hope Mr. Muscat shall enlighten us the way forward towards this worrying situation.

Why are you expecting enlightenment from Dr Muscat in an emergency situation? We have 'know all' bigwigs in the seats of Government...why don't you ask for enlightenment from them and from their bla bla bla EU friends?
E Gatt

@ P Vella
I agree with you that asking for “enlightenment from Dr Muscat” would be asking a bit too much. His advice during the Tunisian revolt was not at all inspiring, so let’s hope he keeps his mouth shut this time.

@E.Gatt
I'm sure Gonzi PN and all his friends and supporters will eventually come up with the brightest idea :) I do not think in this position, neither parties can come up with a solution to a probable "biblical Proportions". Let's hope this situation settles and the EU help us otherwise we will sink due to dense population :)

@ E Gatt
One man's meat is another man's poison Mr Gatt. That's the fact. Whether you agree or not with Dr Muscat, business always involves the gain of an enterprise at the expense of another. another fact is that no enlightenment seems to be emanating from a Government who purports itself as having the solution to all problems
