Frattini expects migrants wave 'of biblical proportions'

The European Union this morning predictably suspended talks with Libya on a cooperation agreement.

An urgent meeting of the Political and Security Committee (PSC) is due to be held this afternoon to discuss possible further actions against Libya.

A spokesman for the Commission told The Times that “possible sanctions will be discussed” and that all the 27 member states “are encouraged to come up with concrete proposals” on the way forward.

The College of Commissioners this morning discussed the unfolding events in Libya and called upon Colonel Gaddafi to stop the violence and start talking to the people.

According to a Commission spokesman “the threats to his own people are not acceptable.”

Meanwhile, Home Affairs Ministers from southern European states are meeting in Rome to discuss the possible influx of migrants.

Italian Minister Franco Frattini said an influx of migrants of 'biblical proportions' was feared, with as many as 300,000 migrants crossing over to Europe.

@ all, IMMA POSSIBBLI L-INTERESSI TAL-MALTIN, IL-PREZZ TAZ-ZEJT U T-TURIZMU AKTAR IMPORTANTI MID-DMIJA FIT-TOROQ GHALIKOM?????????????????????

Mr. Holme, some of us Maltese actually put certain things way second to human bloodshed. Is it possible to simply understand this and put fuel prices and tourism second to human life for a change! Our politicians have colluded enough with this regime, the least we can do is contribute our fair share to the humanitarian crisis we helped create.

So what's your point? Are you arguing we shouldn't be prepared?

What if 10% of those 350,000 land in Malta, which is entirely possible? What if the 350,000 turns out to be more like 1m or 3m people eventually?

My guess is that it will eventually be much higher. 350,000 could be the initial wave of Libyan refugees but if the country devolves into anarchy, think about all the Africans who would use it as Africa's easy unmonitored way to Europe...

Why are you expecting enlightenment from Dr Muscat in an emergency situation? We have 'know all' bigwigs in the seats of Government...why don't you ask for enlightenment from them and from their bla bla bla EU friends?

@ P Vella

I agree with you that asking for “enlightenment from Dr Muscat” would be asking a bit too much. His advice during the Tunisian revolt was not at all inspiring, so let’s hope he keeps his mouth shut this time.

@E.Gatt
I'm sure Gonzi PN and all his friends and supporters will eventually come up with the brightest idea :) I do not think in this position, neither parties can come up with a solution to a probable "biblical Proportions". Let's hope this situation settles and the EU help us otherwise we will sink due to dense population :)

@ E Gatt
One man's meat is another man's poison Mr Gatt. That's the fact. Whether you agree or not with Dr Muscat, business always involves the gain of an enterprise at the expense of another. another fact is that no enlightenment seems to be emanating from a Government who purports itself as having the solution to all problems
