McCoist to succeed Smith at Rangers

Ally McCoist will take over as Rangers boss when Walter Smith steps down at the end of the season, the Scottish Premier League giants confirmed yesterday. Rangers idol McCoist had long been expected to succeed Smith after the duo returned to the helm at Ibrox in 2007.

McCoist, 48, spent 15 years of his playing career with Rangers, making more than 500 appearances for the club and scoring a record 355 goals.

Since working in tandem with Smith, Rangers have won six trophies and reached the UEFA Cup final.

“We are delighted to confirm Ally as our next manager when Walter Smith steps down at the end of the season,” Rangers chief executive Martin Bain said.

“First and foremost Ally is a passionate Rangers supporter who has been a loyal servant to the club both as a player and more recently assistant manager.

“He has contributed greatly to our success over the past four years and that is why we feel he is the right man to replace Walter.”

McCoist, who will be assisted by Kenny McDowall and first-team coach Ian Durrant, said: 'What Walter has done is incredible.

'Following him is like taking the microphone from Frank Sinatra. It's a very difficult act to follow.

'But it's not something I'm scared of, anything but.

'I am confident enough I can continue the great tradition.

'I'm well aware of what this club means to people.'
