Havens of serenity

The valleys winding through the densely populated towns of Qormi, Luqa, Ħal-Farruġ, Żebbuġ and Siġġiewi can be a haven of serenity, a refuge for townsfolk who choose to stroll in the natural ambience close to home.

One of the recent walks organised by the Malta Ramblers’ Association took place in these valleys, commonly known as Wied il-Kbir, Wied Ħanżira and Wied Costa.

First-timers were impressed by the wilderness and the beauty of the valley system so close to the populated villages, with their variety of flora and the beautiful scenery.

The walk had its high and low moments as the ramblers came across three cars dumped on the valley floor. Some masonry was noted lying in the water, probably dumped – hopefully not intended for some illegal use.

The matter was brought to the attention of the police, who were asked to investigate and have the eyesores removed.

Alex Vella, president of the Ramblers’ Association, said the police took immediate action and had the car carcasses removed.

“It is hoped that the police will succeed in booking the culprits,” Mr Vella said.

The Ramblers’ Association organises walks for its members every weekend.
