By voting against a motion calling for a safe crossing at the Mrieħel bypass, the government showed it did not care about residents and workers in the area, Labour MP Marie Louise Coleiro Preca said.
Ms Coleiro Preca had moved a motion in Parliament calling on the government to guarantee a safe crossing at the busy thoroughfare. The motion, however, was defeated.
While debating the motion, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt had argued the solution for the area’s accessibility was not an overpass but the improvement of nearby Mill Street.
In 2010, Transport Malta had said the building of an overpass was not economically feasible, upsetting the families of two girls who had perished while crossing the road.
A similar motion had already been defeated in January.
