FKNK condemns shooting of spoonbills
Expresses support with BirdLife's efforts to curtail illegal practices
The hunting federation has vowed to cancel the membership of any member hunter found guilty by a court of shooting at spoonbills that sought shelter in Malta two days ago.
In a statement, the FKNK said that if any of the people who had anything to do with the atrocity was a member, it would immediately cancel his membership.
It pointed out that a person can only re-apply for a licence to carry a shotgun for hunting purposes if he or she can supply evidence of a membership with an organisation that defends hunting and trapping.
The FKNK said that it did not have any control over this and it was, therefore, up to the authorities to take heed of its assertions over this ironic situation.
“If such persons manage to find refuge in the folds of other hunting and trapping organisations, they will still have the opportunity to carry a shotgun for hunting purposes and continue to harm the hunting and trapping fraternity and the environment at large,” it said.
The FKNK said that the reports of the spoonbills’ visit should have been of particular interest to both birdwatchers and serious hunters and trappers, since it was not a common sight or occurrence.
However, it seemed there were certain people who felt they were above the law and society’s legal parameters and continued to flaunt their unruly prowess thinking they could get away with it with little or no consequence.
“The shooting of illegal species is a subject of complete condemnation not only from protectionist quarters but also from environment conservation ones such as the FKNK.
“The FKNK supports the efforts of Birdlife Malta and of all those public sectors involved in curtailing such illegal practices including, but not limited to, the Administrative Law Enforcement unit within the Police Corps.
“Whilst the FKNK rejects all efforts by any sector to try to generalise such issues to reflect badly on the hunting fraternity, it will continue to do its utmost to assist with all its resources to eliminate these remnants of such illegal environmental acts,” it promised.

Good words from FNKK. I hope that these are now translated into serious action. They should help ALE to carry out their duties to apprehend the culprits and to ensure that such actions do not take place again.
The Government should also ensure that there are sufficient ALE officers to prevent such situations.

A little improvement from fknk. However they certainly know some of the culprits and it is now a little too late to educate such hunters so half or more of the members should be expelled. Fknk knows exactly what am getting at!

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Let us see this 'support' materialise, first.

"The hunting federation has vowed to cancel the membership of any member hunter found guilty". Tell that to the marines Mr. Farrugia! If you want to do your "utmost to assist ... to eliminate these remnants of such illegal environmental acts" instruct your members publically to report to you any suspicions they may have and offer a reward to anyone provide information that would apprehend the scum that did this. Only then wil we start to believe your beautiful words...

3.’…..(FKNK) will continue to do its utmost ….. to eliminate ….such illegal environmental acts’
It was heartening to hear FKNK issue such statements some time ago – however what has it effectively done to deter and identify the criminal hunters. Whilst over the years FKNK’s members failed to report their criminal peers, it is not too late for FKNK to take some initiatives without preconditions.
Lastly ‘illegal ENVIRONMENTAL acts’ sound such illogical – one cannot refer to such atrocity as an ‘environmental act’ (even if one puts illegal in front).
Nonetheless thanks again, as this is one of the most promising statements ever uttered by FKNK.

Congratulations FKNK……it seems we are getting there.
May I suggest 3 improvements on the contents of the last three sentences.
1.’….environment conservation ones such as FKNK.’
Notwithstanding the trees tended to by hunters – this initiative had the sole purpose to hunt down (unprotected) birds – and the latter are NOT considered pests locally. Moreover hunting throughout the countryside, apart from posing a factual risk to anyone seeking to appreciate the countryside without taking anything away from it, entails also the spreading of lead in fields.
Thus it is somewhat illogical to term such activity environment conservation.
2.’….FKNK supports the efforts of BLM…’
Excellent! However BLM’s efforts also involve assisting CABS in their initiatives to deter such atrocities and effectively get criminal hunters prosecuted. CABS are entitled to dislike anything related to hunting, but at least they continue to effectively save protected birds notwithstanding the verbal threats by FKNK and violence purported by some FKNK members.
Thus next time CABS are around – pls support them in deterring abuses.

and what shall you tell the remaining EU poachers? Germany http://www.komitee.de/en/projects/germany/raptor-poaching All raptor species in Germany are still officially categorised as ’huntable wildlife’. Italy http://www.komitee.de/en/projects/italy/southern-italy UK http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-11324497 http://www.rspb.org.uk/ourwork/policy/wildbirdslaw/wildbirdcrime/birdsofprey.aspx http://www.rspb.org.uk/ourwork/policy/wildbirdslaw/wildbirdcrime/poisoning.aspx Poaching exists world wide...these are just a few examples...but no country has ever abnned hunting because of poaching...

The culprits should be hanged at Ghadira Natural reserve for the satisfaction of the bird community.

Shut up! I am part of the 'bird community' and I disassociate myself from such hysterical statements. There is a limit to everything.

How nice of you Mr Cordina, anything else you wish for the culprits, how about stone them to death.

No. I don't agree with you. Much as I am against hunting and trapping, such violent expressions are not healthy and educational. The culprits should have their weapons confiscated permanently and their licences withdrawn.
All this shows that all along, Birdlife Malta was right in its efforts to curb hunting and trapping. This is a slap in the face at those who have always said that Birdlife Malta is either lying or exaggerating. However, one hopes, one always hopes that truth will eventually get the better, over wrong, and over evil.

They should be handed the maximum sentence under the Maltese law...that includes a fine and possibly imprisonment...however, capital punishmnt is not even admistered to murderers..let alone paochers...some people however, fail to control their emotions..including extrimists like yourself...
Shame on poachers & extrimists who add fuel to burning fire with petty arguments and banal comments
