The Armed Forces of Malta has not yet committed itself to participate in the Frontex Operation Hermes 2011 starting in the Mediterranean tomorrow.

Frontex yesterday said that an operation is due to start tomorrow with the deployment of aerial and maritime assets from Italy and Malta.

Sources said that while the army was still evaluating a request for participation by the European border-management agency.

The sources said that in view of the AFM’s possible participation, the army was seeking to address and staff the possible deployment of its personnel or assets to the theatre of operations, in the area of Lampedusa.

The AFM is continuously monitoring the situation and developments in the southern Mediterranean region.
