Maltapost plc has adopted a virtualised server infrastructure based on Microsoft’s Hyper-V R2. The implementation of the important project has given Malta Post’s small IT team the means to support a large, continually growing technology footprint.
Pierre Montebello, chief officer mails and systems at Maltapost explained the Microsoft virtualisation solution was selected primarily for cost, compatibility with teh existing skill set, and Microsoft’s long-term product road map.
The postal company has been constantly looking for new ways to use technology to improve the quality of its services. This resulted in the deployment of more and more servers and by 2009 Maltapost had more than 40 servers in a small server room.
Mr Montebello said the situation was becoming unmanageable and challenging as issues with systems administration, power consumption, cooling and physical space mounted.
Maltapost’s computing, surveillance, retail and communications infrastructure is currently supported by a team of four IT professionals who manage existing systems, deploy new solutions, and support 300 staff.
