No damage was suffered by the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra temples when the protective shelter over Hagar Qim was torn by yesterday’s gale force winds, Heritage Malta said this morning.

In a statement, the agency said that its staff went on site yesterday evening and with the help of the Civil Protection Department stabilised the components that were loosened or torn.

Consequently further damage to the shelter was avoided, it said, adding that the operation was carried out in the dark and under difficult weather conditions.

Heritage Malta said that a thorough inspection of the prehistoric structures was conducted this morning when it was confirmed that the temples did not sustain any damage.

However, the temples were kept closed today. Although Hagar Qim is to remain closed until further notice, Mnajdra will reopen as from tomorrow.
