A van transporting 140 litres and 20 kilogrammes of illegal pesticides from Sicily was stopped and confiscated by Customs officers on Wednesday.

The pesticides were hidden among plants at the back of the vehicle and in a false bottom, Customs said.

The driver, who had just arrived from Pozzallo, claimed he was transporting plants. But Customs officers and staff from the Malta Standards Authority uncovered the pesticides, which can only be imported under certain conditions.

The van was confiscated.
