La Traviata to be screened at the Eden Cinemas

The Eden Cinemas will be screening Verdi’s most intimate opera La Traviatata from the Royal Opera House, starring Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja on Tuesday.

La Traviata is based on a contemporary story, in the demi-monde of Paris of the 1850s. Its star is beautiful courtesan Violletta. She is a fallen woman, an outcast by the standards of the social morality of the time. Verdi evoked both the glittering party world of the 19th-century Paris and tender melancholy for Violletta as her first pure love affair is cruelly cut short by social pressure and death itself.

This particular production was performed in June 2009.

Eden Cinemas are giving an opportunity to opera and ballet lovers to view some of the world’s best performances live on one of Europe’s largest screens. La Traviata is the fifth screening at the Eden Cinemas this season and is expected to be a particularly successful opera screening due to it being one of the Verdi’s most popular works and because it features Malta’s very own Joseph Calleja.

• Tickets may be obtained from the Eden Cinema box office or online at www.edencinemas.com.mt
