This is not fair. The majority of Maltese are either indifferent to the introduction of a divorce law or against it. A minority, whatever kind of minority, will never get its just rights if subjected to a referendum.
I suggest to the Yes for Divorce Movement to boycott the referendum, after all this not a call to the people to choose whether our country should enter the European Union with all its benefits and obligations or not. It is all about a minority getting its just rights recognised.
With the Church vehemently against any legislation that favours divorce, I believe the divorce movement has as much chance to get a yes vote as a snowball in hell! The only just and fair way is to debate this issue in Parliament and then the same House will vote, without any party loyalties, for or against it. It is cheaper, much cheaper, of course.
Please let’s not come up with that old chestnut that it was not in the electoral do-list. If a tsunami or an earthquake hits our islands, one would not go to the electoral manifesto to check whether to take emergency action or not.
