Everyone seems to have his opinion about the issue of divorce. The Nationalist Party chose to adhere to the basic pillars of the party: Christian Democratic ideology (if not, it would be a farce!). The Labour Party is still undecided – might be a question of strategy!

But.

This is an issue for every single individual – MP or not!

We declare that a good percentage of our population is Roman Catholic. Almost the absolute majority are baptised. This makes us a Catholic country and Catholic people. But this does not mean all of us know what the value of being a Christian means.

Being human beings gives one the right to think and do things that physically/emotionally/psychologically are best for us but when one question his beliefs will there be any conflict?

If you are one that don’t want to live your life as a Christian, as a baptised person, which means living by example the Word of God – the Scripture, the issue about divorce will go down simply as a matter of right and a matter of freedom, things that affect the person directly and in a way egoistically.

But if you proclaim yourself a Christian, then this will become also a matter of faith, a matter of what your true leader preached and a matter of what is right and what it was faithfully said to us by Himself as wrong!

Do you remember what He said to His disciples when asked directly on divorce vis-à-vis Moses? He said Moses allowed the right to send one’s wife (divorce) only because of “your hard-headedness”.

Fellow Christians, let us not be faced with this statement ourselves!

Being divorced means you will not be in line with the Catholic teachings and, thus, could not present oneself as Christian (although He is the only one that will ultimately judge us). This will be a case in point where you could not “lead by example” your children, your friends, your neighbours!

Seeking divorce means your intention is to remarry civilly; in other words cohabit. Going for divorce is not a must if you only “need” to be away from your “spouse” because of what happened in your marriage. You only need to be civilly separated. This does not mean you are breaching any Catholic teachings, as long as you continue to respect your vows and your Catholic faith!

Voting in favour of divorce, in my humble opinion, as a Christian, will be going against the teachings of Jesus and if I want the Son of God to remain my leader, the leader of all truth, I should refrain from voting in favour of divorce and I feel all true Christians should convey this message, coupled with that of hope and love.

I understand there are couples out there passing through difficulties in their marriage and this is not easy. Those who wed in the Catholic Church know the vows we made on the altar and before God Himself! We all went for this with the aim to be successful in our marriage.

Does having a way out (divorce) of marriage (man instigated) not encourage less commitment to one’s spouse and the vows one made on one’s big day?
