Motorcyclist awarded €22,000 in damages after accident

A motorcyclist has been awarded compensation of over €22,000 by a court after suffering a leg injury in 2008.

Ronnie Pace filed his action for damages against George Camilleri who, he claimed, was responsible for the traffic accident.

Mr Pace said that he was driving his motor cycle in Main Street, Mosta when he was hit by a Toyota driven by Mr Camilleri.

The court heard that Mr Camilleri had accepted responsibility for the action though he submitted that Mr Pace had not suffered any permanent disability.

In its judgement the court heard a medical expert declare that Mr Pace had suffered serious harm to his left leg, though surgery had been successful. The expert concluded that Mr Pace had suffered a four per cent disability. The court then awarded Mr Pace €22,425.20 in damages.

And perhaps motorcyclist respect the drivers... not zig zagging between the cars from one lane to another... (I am not generalising)... but some do it.....

What, motorcyclist needs respect!!.. you know how many times I got frightened by motorcyclist flying past me... You know we do not hear motorcycles coming until they are next to driver window(sometimes next to passenger window). Motorcyclists need to respect the law, drive after cars not next to the cars on the middle of the road!

Dear Aldo I understand your point of view about motorbikes zigzagging between lanes, but unfortunately, sometimes its necessary. A lot of drivers tend to stay on the outer part of the outer lane, completely ignoring motorbikes behind them, forcing us to wait behind them flashing our lights or honking for a few minutes before they realize. This doesn't mean that they move out of the way. Only last week i had some guy in a modern expensive 4x4 sitting on the outer part of his lane completely blocking any chance i had of overtaking him. He saw me in his rear-view, i kindly signaled to him to move 30cm to the left, and instead of obliging, he actually gestured to me so that i overtake from the left of him - which i refuse to do as i know what it means to be cut off from the inner part of the inner lane by some crazy guy on a scooter As you said, i'm not generalizing, and have noticed a lot more people are letting us through when they notice us... but i guess nothing is perfect :)

Actually this ''zigzagging'' you mentioned is actually called filtering and is perfectly legal. That is one of the many advantages of a motorcycle (not getting stuck in traffic). Caution should always be used though and high speed maneuvers are highly dangerous.

@ J Pace Most of the time it’s motorcyclists themselves that pose danger to other traffic and not the other way round. They are allowed to zigzag around slow moving traffic only and not when going at 40 or 50 km/hr on busy roads. This is besides that they overtake from the left ignoring cars turning to the left at junctions. It is not the first time I saw a brave chap riding only on the rare wheel of his bike down Aldo Moro Road in Marsa. Also they are a threat when they ride in groups and chatting while they ride. They also expect you to stop and give way on narrow roads. I, myself, am a rider too, but I’m very careful on the road and never think that I’m special and own the road! The truth is that many think that they are KINGS cos they got power but forget they got no shield in case of accident. 35 years ago they used to laugh at me because I used to wear a crash helmet and same thing because I used the seatbelt then as well.
