The GWU’s Professionals, Finance and Services Section said today that it is opposing the closing down of the British Pensions Office in Malta. The Office provided services to local pensioners who receive a British pension, particularly those pensioners who receive pensions for their service in the British forces along the years.
GWU Secretary General Tony Zarb said that this was a great blow to both employees and local pensioners.
“Local pensioners are opposing this move and the GWU shall be writing to the British Government to express the pensioners concerns. The union is calling on Maltese pensioners receiving a British pension not to rush into the proposed system of receiving the payment from abroad. The union is requesting an urgent discussion with the British Government authorities in so far as the employees are concerned,” Mr Zarb said.
The union has asked for the intervention of the Maltese Government.
