Think Yatzee and Lover Boy Index won the U*Bet Championship finals for Swedish Premier and Gold class horses yesterday.

These finals, held on a short distance of 2,140m, were the highlight of the sixth meeting of the season made up of eight races, all for trotters.

Favourite Think Yatzee (Clint Vassallo) was the fastest horse at the start of the Premier final, opening a length’s lead from Alf Eme and Affe Fager.

In the straight for home, Think Yatzee was strong enough to hold off the sprint of Flash Coger (Julian Farrugia) which was coming strongly from the outside. Debutante Wiss Night Hawk (Charles Camilleri) and Isolated (Noel Baldacchino) ended in third and fourth places.

Think Yatzee clocked an average speed of 1.15” per kilometre and victory was its third in a row in this championship.

After the race, Maltco director Mario Cassar presented the trophy to driver Vassallo and his father Antoine, owner of Think Yatzee.

Eight horses lined up for the Gold class final. Here, Lover Boy Index (Mark Desira) led all the way and finished first half-a-length ahead of Mint Spirit (Frank Portelli). Gentle Way (Eric Bezzina) and Kosai LJ (Frencu Cassar) were third and fourth horses in. The winner clocked an average of 1.16.5” per kilometre.

Meanwhile, Maltese jockey Michael Sultana failed to classify among the top three in the first heat of the Med. Championship for jockeys, in France, yesterday.

Sultana rode Kimberley Downs in a race won by Almageur (Tavares da Silva).
