European Parliament president Prof. Jerzy Buzek recently paid a short visit to Malta during which he addressed an extraordinary session of the National Student Travel Foundation’s (NSTF) Mini European Assembly held at the President’s Palace in Valletta.

The student participants were welcomed by Dr Julian Vassallo, head of the European Parliament office in Malta, who coordinated this session, together with NSTF head of educational and cultural affairs Mariella-Pia Tabone.

NSTF secretary general Francis Stivala outlined the objectives of the foundation and how these were being fulfilled through educational initiatives such as the Mini European Assembly, which is now in its 22nd year.

Prof. Buzek described in brief the way the European Parliament functioned and talked about how the long discussions and negotiations in parliamentary sessions were the basis for a democratic Europe.

He urged students to take an active role in European affairs and to be prepared to take part in debates on important issues.

Two student participants from University then made interventions before opening the floor for a short debate.
