Smart Light Systems is embarking on a drive for greener and zero recurring cost traffic lighting systems with a pilot project in one of the most traffic-heavy areas in Attard.
Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said and deputy mayor Stefan Cordina launched the pilot project in Attard with the installation of the first pedestrian crossing lighting in Mosta Road, a few metres away from St Nicholas primary school.
The project is an initiative of Smart Light Systems in collaboration with the Attard council.
The pedestrian crossing is now lit up using environmentally friendly light emitting diodes (LEDs), which emit no carbon emissions and which use 100 per cent renewable energy.
Offering the most advanced form of this type of technology, these LEDs are powered by a solar panel system and thus require zero consumption of state-provided electricity, lighting up as soon as natural light dips under a specific level.
This is the first time motorists will have a clear indication of the presence of a pedestrian crossing in this area.
“The solution has been researched and designed in Malta and certified to highest EU and German standards.
“This is also the first time Smart Light Systems is venturing into street lighting as part of a wider strategy for diversification,” said Jonathan Borg, one of the directors of Smart Light Systems.
The pedestrian crossing is now accompanied by a black and white pole raised three metres from the ground.
Together with the LED lighting, this has significantly increased visibility of the pedestrian crossing, making it much safer to use.
