Some 2,500 images of documents at the National Archives are being taken daily to digitally preserve their historical importance, according to Education Minister Dolores Cristina.

Addressing the National Archive Forum, Mrs Cristina said the images were taken in a way that did not damage the documents and would make them available for people to view online.

The Audiovisual Archives were set up earlier this year and, through a project entitled Malta’s Lost Voices, a database was developed that includes Maltese songs from the 1930s and 1940s.

Similar preservation works would be carried out on some items at the Public Broadcasting Services archives, which risked being lost, she said.
