Tunisia’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said it respected “the will of the Egyptian people” as defiant protestors gathered in strength against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Tunisia is “confident of the wisdom of the people, its strong patriotism and in its capacity to overcome this delicate situation in its history, which will help preserve Egypt and its people, as well as its institutions and knowledge,” the ministry said.

Egyptians were inspired by a popular uprising in Tunisia that ousted authoritarian leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali last month, and have since January 25 organised massive rallies to demand the end of Mr Mubarak’s 29-year rule.
