Daniel Bajada made it all the way to the quarter-finals of a Category Three ranking tournament, played recently in Bari.
The Maltese Young Athlete of the Year, who plays for ASD Fiaccola in the Italian league, beat Levon Zakaryan 3-1 before two identical 3-0 wins over Massimiliano di Giuseppe and Vincenzo de Angelis in the group stage.
In the knock-out phase, Bajada eliminated Corrado Mastroianni and Sandro Sicali after two narrow 3-2 wins but then lost to Mattia Galdieri, the no.192 seed, 3-1 in the quarter-finals.
In the doubles, Bajada teamed up with ASD Fiaccola team-mate Domenico Diciolla. The pair succeeded in reaching the semi-finals after beating Mastroianni and D’Amico 3-0 and Bozza and Montaperto 3-2 in the previous rounds.
However, they were unable to maintain their winning form after losing 3-0 to Alessandrino and Galdieri in the last four.
Bajada will be back in Italy next weekend for ASD Fiaccola’s Serie B match against ACSD Sant’Espedito Napoli. In their last outing, Bajada’s team got beaten by leaders ASD Tennistavolo Norbello 5-1.
