Illegal structure removed
Government employees this morning removed an illegal porch in front of a boathouse on the seafront next to Independence Gardens in Sliema.
A number of boats which were also blocking public access to the area and the jetty were moved.
The operation was conducted by the Lands Department and the police.

Try coming over to Gozo its full of such eye soar boat houses and shacks of all sizes, make the Gozitans pay for all the illegal structures Plus VAT they seem to get away with.

Symbolic indeed! The rate of intervention by the Lands Department, since Jason Azzopardi took over responsibility , has increased from about 70 a year to 700.
One thing that this administration has understood is that the best policy is to do what it deems best for the country, irrespective of any election fallout. Hence the power station, hence City Gate, hence Public Transport, hence Air Malta, hence the Docks, hence the removal of subsidies from Water & Electricity, fuel , gas etc. and so on and so forth.
The Nationalist Party is not prepared to sit on the fence even on matters as delicate as the divorce issue.

Well done. All in the right direction. Qui-si-Sana seafront next please. Pool concessions stealing public beaches from under our nose. Blatanly and increasing in footprint. Obscene. A clear case of unaccountability.

Reading this article and some comments only indicates that some people need to change mentality or attitude towards life. On one hand you have people making public land theirs and now that they were removed we are commenting on weak/strong, illegal villas, bastions and other places.
Once I was on a small boat and we tried to reach the mentioned jetty to get down our stuff. A boat was blocking the way. They erected a tent from one side or their boat to the other side of the....jetty making it like the porch of their boat. When we got close the onwers/family on the boat looked at us kind of 'if you hit our boat we'll...!!'
Perhaps some of the comments below were written by this family.

All the drama that was made last year when Mepa removed the canopy chairs and tables in sliema. It was all a show. Everyone and waste of money as everything is back to square one.
Mepa is strong with the weak and weak with the strong. I totally agree.

So what if it had been there for years? That should have meant an even bigger fine based on the number of years the illegal building stood. Yes it was having a bad effect on the area because it was taking up space which did not belong to the person who built it. No permit = no building. What's so hard for the Maltese to understand about that? Why don'tthe Maltese care about their country? Why don't the Maltese care about cleanliness? Why are the Maltese so selfish? Why are the Maltese obsessed with money at any cost?
Please answer these questions.

Armier?

Parliamentary Secretary the Hon Jason Azzopardi has dared and achieved what his predecessors FAILED MISERABLY to do i.e attempt to cleanse Malta of abusive sqatters and to return public land to the public.
However much and much more needs to be done not only at the notorious Armier abusive
misappropriation of public land, but also at our own Capital city whereby instead of enforcing the Law, an illegal container like structure on public land at the Marsamxetto Bastions was instead of being removed at ehe expense of the offender as per the relevant old MEPA enforcement notice two years ago , is being 'sanctioned' as it is being used by workers deployed in the restroration of the Valletta Bastions .
Apparently also in our demcratic countrry, all animals are equal but 'Buffalos' seem to be more equal than others.
MEPA reform my foot!!

My confidence in Mepa, or in whoever is responsible, will only be restored (if I ever had it in the first place), when the really big offenders are seriously tackled. A whole illegal village on stolen land at Armier, or at St. thomas Bay, is much more important than a porch in front of a boathouse.

C'mon Mepa you seem to be improving. Two structures removed in as many weeks. But still, you are going after small fish. Yet it is some improvement. Mepa Boss, listen to the people and you will gain some respect. Tearing down small structures is good for show but how about clearing all the illegal structures at Dwejra? How they ruined that little inlet with illegal boat houses. Do something worthwhile for a change. I am still wondering where the sewage from these boat houses end up?

What about taking a look at Spinola Bay? There the so called "local" fishermen regularly dump plastic bottles, dead fish and diesel straight into the bay. There is a huge vehicle battery that's been there for months, outside by all of the rubbsih boats (which also block public access to a public right of way). They have also damaged much of the lovely stone that was put down 2 years ago with oil stains since they regularly drive and park their vehicles illegally along what is a pedestrianised zone by the waterfront. As for the dog mess left by the local fishermen (and residents) in this area, that is absolutely disgusting.
The area (particularly at weekends) is always covered in rubbish, empty beer/vodka bottles etc by the benches in the mornings after the night before by young Maltese teenagers who come from other parts of Malta. Why don't the police enforce the "no alcohol in a public place" regulation down here by the waterfront? It's only a 1-2min walk from St Julians police station.
It could be such a lovely area but as usual, the Maltese don't seem to care at all about their own environment.
