To avoid the enormous costs that would be involved in the construction of a tunnel at great depth, and not to have an unwanted normal bridge to connect our two islands, as such a bridge would spoil the uniqueness of Gozo, I suggest that the construction of a bridge cum tunnel, below seawater, be given consideration.

The proposed bridge, which could not be of the suspension type as this would require cables which would interfere with shipping as well as show up above sea-level, could be constructed only a few metres below water level, allowing sufficient draught for the larger ships normally crossing the channel. The bridge would be supported on piles driven into solid rock and then walls and roof constructed over the bridge to make the resultant tunnel water free.

Considering the number of megastructures which have been and are being constructed worldwide, such a project might well be feasible and cost saving.
