A 65-year-old woman from Paola was critically injured this afternoon when she was assaulted by a 68-year-old man from Marsa in a house in Nerik Sacco Street, Marsa. The man is reportedly her brother-in-law and the incident took place at her sister's house in Marsa.

The incident happened at 5.45 p.m.

The woman was hit several times with a pointed instrument. She was rushed to hospital where her injuries were found to be life-threatening.

Magistrate G Vella is holding an inquiry.

The man has been arrested.
