Wheelchair-bound Rita Vella Borg, who has found herself on a calender thanks to her inspirational nature, was welcomed at the Auberge de Castille today by the Prime Minister, who praised her for her work as President of the Muscular Dystrophy Group.

Mrs Vella Borg was chosen as one of the 12 Women Inspiring Europe by the European Institute for Gender Equality, which is based in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The 12 inspiring women were chosen from over 100 candidates to appear in the 2011 calendar as an inspiration to others.

Rita Vella Borg lives with her husband, Kevin, who also suffers from muscular dystrophy and is wheelchair bound, with the assistance of 24-hour care.

The picture of Mrs Vella Borg was taken by a professional photographer from Lithuania. It took him hours to set up the shot and transform her kitchen into a studio to snap her portrait.

Mrs Vella Borg is also vice president of the National Commission – Persons with Disability.

Her motto is: With the necessary help, you can do what you want! Whatever your disability, you can follow your dreams.
