Pianist Charlene Farrugia will give a performance in a concert entitled ‘Romantic Musical Journey’ at Sagrestia Vault, Valletta Waterfront on February 18 at 7.30 p.m.

Farrugia will present a programme of romantic works by Franz Liszt and Fredric Chopin.

Farrugia will be performing Chopin’s Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise op.22, a composition which was a combination of two pieces of music composed at two different times: the Andante Spianato and the Grande Polonaise, but which Chopin joined together with a fanfare-like sequence.

The Grande Polonaise is said to be the most famous and brilliant of its kind.

The pianist will also perform Chopin’s Scherzo op.20 no 1, which is held to be a very dramatic, dark and lively composition.

Farrugia will be performing Liszt’s Apres une Lecture de Dante: Fantasia Quasi Sonata, Ballade no. 2 in B minor, Hungarian Rhapsodies no. 10 and 6.

Apres une Lecture de Dante: Fantasia Quasi Sonata, is a sonata inspired after reading Dante’s famous epic poem The Divine Comedy, and it is considered to be one of the most difficult pieces in the standard repertoire.

Ballade no. 2 in B minor is a ballad which has dark menacing music but which turns militaristic and then ends softly, with soothing gentle sounds.

Farrugia has been described by legendary pianist Gary Graffman as “a pianist of exceptional talent”.

She studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, graduating with an MA in Piano Performance from the class of Diana Ketler, together with a Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM). She is currently a student of Boris Petrushansky.
