The Arts Students Association (ASA) has reiterated its position against censorship in the light of the recent book controversy in secondary schools and at University.

The organisation is in favour of age guidelines and certification but does not agree with outright bans and sectioning.

“The sectioning of a series of books at the University library is particularly jarring, especially since ASA considers the University to be an institution full of adults, not children who need to be told what kind of reading material is suitable,” the organisation said.

It said it felt this attitude was offensive and patronising and should be condemned.

The ASA said it believed censorship “puts a muzzle on creative thought and imagination, the very same things a University is meant to develop and foster”.
