The 2011 waterpolo season starts this afternoon with matches from the Under-15 BOV competition for boys at Tal-Qroqq.
This will be the first time that an official championship is being organised by the ASA at this time of the year. In all, six teams will be participating, namely, Exiles, Marsascala, Neptunes, San Ġiljan, Sirens and Sliema.
There will be one round and all matches will be played at the National Pool.
ASA president Joe Caruana Curran, in office for only a few months since taking over from Dr Austin Sammut, said he had been favour-ably impressed with the organisation and dedication of all clubs involved in the youth championships.
“It is very clear that there is a collective drive to enhance the popularity and improve the level of the local game,” he said in a statement.
“Several young players attend training sessions up to four times a week during the wintry months. For them, it is very important that competitions of this kind are held throughout the year. Hopefully, this will now be an annual event.”
Besides this competition for U-15s, other waterpolo festivals are also in store up to May and events will include other age groups.
Such competitions would be an ideal build-up for the summer championships, the ASA said.
