Michael Mifsud has finally decided on his future, at least for the next few months, as yesterday the Malta striker put pen on paper to sign a contract with Qormi FC until the end of the season.

Club president Redino Apap told The Times that negotiations, which had started the day before, were concluded in the afternoon.

Registration was immediately filed at the MFA and Mifsud, 29, attended his first training session with his new team-mates at Pembroke later on in the evening.

He is now expected to make his first showing for Qormi in today’s Premier League match against Birkirkara at the National Stadium (see opposite page).

“Michael Mifsud will don the Qormi shirt until the end of the season,” an elated Apap said.

“He will be a great asset to the club and his addition to the squad is a boost for the coach and his team-mates as well. This is a sensational transfer for us, probably the biggest signing Qormi FC ever made in their history.

“With this signing we wanted to show Maltese football that we’re not a dormant club and intend to cement our place in the top flight for more seasons to come.”

Apap said the club’s priority now is for the team to make it into the Championship Pool next season.

At the moment, they are lagging behind in seventh place but within striking distance of nearest rivals Ħamrun Spartans who are two points better off than the Yellow-Blacks.

“We are a club of ambitions but the priority now is to see this team playing in the Championship Pool,” Apap added.

“We have two difficult matches coming up but we can still make it even though we have to hope that other results go our way to make the top six.”

Mifsud played for Valletta in the second part of last season.

He helped the Citizens win the Anniversary Cup and FA Trophy but opted not to re-join Valletta in summer and instead practised with the national team for the next six months.

However, pressure was building steadily on Mifsud to re-ignite his club career and last month he was on the verge of signing for Floriana FC before opting to take up the Qormi offer.

“We want Mifsud to feel at home with us,” Apap said.

“Then, if he decides to prolong his stay, we’ll be happy to negotiate another contract in summer.”
