While the opposition was acting for the gallery, the government had opted to be serious and find a fair solution for Monti hawkers, Parliamentary Secretary Jason Azzopardi said this evening.
Addressing a news conference, he referred to a statement made by the PL spokesman Chris Cardona earlier today that the government imposed to move the Sunday hawkers to the Park and Ride area without consultation, and the new site is inadequate.
Dr Azzopardi said that the opposition was showing its political opportunism when it tried to take advantage out of every situation, without ever making proposals.
The government had done its utmost in the past weeks to find a central and accessible zone for the Sunday market that was also big enough and accessible.
The secretariat challenged the opposition to declare its intentions for the market.
He asked the opposition to confirm or deny whether hawkers had been promised a site in Valletta during a meeting at the party’s headquarters last Tuesday. If this was the case, the PL should say where this site was.
The PL should also confirm or deny whether a promise was made to the daily Valletta hawkers that a new PL government would again place them in from of Merchants’ Street shops.
