Appeal for moderation on the issue of divorce

In the second of his series of articles on divorce (February 1), Austin Gatt wonders whether it is the common good or personal interest that is the real motivation of the pro lobby.

He appears to favour the common good over personal interest but should this be at any cost? The primacy of the common good over personal interest was the basis of both of the 20th century’s totalitarian creeds, fascism and communism and it lies at the heart of most forms of religious fundamentalism.

Similarly, the primacy of personal interest has led to some of the most outrageous aspects of the American way of life, as admirably depicted by Michael Moore and promoted by the Mad Hatter fringe of the Republican Party. What price moderation…
