Isle of MTV concert to return on June 30
Video: Alan Adami
The highly popular Isle of MTV concert will be held again on the granaries in Floriana on June 30, the Malta Tourism Authority announced this afternoon.
The announcement was made when the MTA renewed its partnership with MTV Network for a fifth year.
The line-up of this year's concert is expected to be known in about two months' time.
Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco said the concert was important for the promotion of Malta as a tourist destination for the young. He said that in 2006 - the year before the first concert was held - 151,000 tourists aged under 24 had visited Malta. Last year, there were 269,000 tourists under 24. There had also been a 13% increase in tourists aged between 25 and 44.
The Isle of MTV is the largest free open air concert in Europe. Over the years it has featured Lady Gaga, David Guetta, the Black Eyed Peas, Kid Rock, Maroon 5 and Scissor Sisters, among the top stars.
The show is shown on 20 MTV channels throughout Europe.
Antonio Canto, senior vice president of Viacom Brand Solutions said it was planned that this year's concert would be screened just a few days after the show. Over the past years it was screened in September.
He said that MTV in collaboration with the MTA would also feature a new promotional spot on Malta which was filmed recently.
The MTV concert will be supported by year-round marketing activities.

great words spoken to deaf ears there mate! unfortunately we live in a country where ignorance reigns supreme and any band considered metal is satanic. i've seen a church magazine which had a story about a satanic drug addicted couple who listened to nickelback to fulfill their addiction and religion, specifically whilst listening to the song 'hero'! also in a local feast, during a fireworks show, "amaranth" by nightwish was played. i later got to know that the parish minister called the band club warning them not to play such 'dark and evil' music again. i gave up on ever seeing approval of our music by the authorities. we'll just have to go abroad to see our idols.

Many comment/argue that Isle of MTV does not give exposure to the rock genre, keep in mind however, it takes 2 to tango. The band might not after all want to perform here or in such an event.
In my opinion any well established band will have several tour dates already planned whilst the IoM contracts are usually finalised about 2 months before the event. See it as an advantage or disadvantage, this festival will usually have a set list of artists that have either released a stream of songs that have become popular on the channel itself or artists that have not had the required exposure and need such an event to help them (e.g. Lady Gaga in her first appearance and Esme Denters).
It is noticed that certain genres are sidelined and it's probably due to financial reasons, after all, most rock bands are in high demand around the world and a free open air festival would not be paying them as much as a high turnover event.

Throughout the years of Isle of MTV in Malta, it was only full of commercial music and weird art.
It's time for a change. What about some rock bands from soft rock to hard metal?
What about bringing Nightwish band? That's what I call music, a mix of classic music with classic instruments and a mix of rock. It's all about the classic music notes not electronic sounds with plastic wear and robotic moves!!!!
When you go through the MTV channels on our television sets, they produce programs of history of rock'n'roll and the rock era throughout the years. MTV should be a mix of music genres not only one...
Waiting for the list of music artists visiting Malta this year.... : )

I would love to see some rock bands this year Isle Of MTV; like I said before in another post, My Chemical Romance would be awesome. There are a lot of fans of them here in Malta. All-American Rejects, Panic! At The Disco, Muse, 30 Seconds To Mars are some of the great bands that I, and other people, would love to see them perform. Black Eyed Peas also would be great too. I am big fan of them, so I would love to see them again. BUT... a big NO NO to Justin Bieber!!

C Borg
Feb 3rd 2011, 08:59
It's MTV network who decides on who will come or not and not the Maltese organisers and this will depend most probably on artists who will have new albums or singles during that period or depending on contracts artists have with certain record labels.
So don't waste your time asking for your favourite artists cause I don't think people at MTV are reading your comments!

For those below requesting real bands and real music , forget it, MTV stopped being a music channel about 10 years ago, now you get reality trash with pimp this and that, 16 and pregnant and god knows what else. But i guess for the teeny boppers out there it's a good show for them and the thousands of students on holiday enjoy if thats your thing.
As for the rest of us metal heads see you at Sonisphere Knebworth THE BIG FOUR \../

I won't expect rock bands present in an MTV event. It's like having Lawrence Gonzi addressing a Labour meeting.
So let's leave rock bands to where they belong: in rock concerts aimed only at rock bands, and not mixed with this MTV rubbish!!!!

You rockers out there, don't knock it. Isle of MTV is what it is - if you don't like the line-up, don't go. I'm a 70s classic rock fan thru and thru (I'm 51 - forgive me), but I went once, in 2009 and Gaga and the BEP were pretty darn good, in their own way. OK, so the other acts were "hekk u hekk" but I still respect them. Chill, brothers, chill!

First of all true true Vive le Rock, i call myself a Gothic but but i will attend the Isle of MTV because even though i wouldn't love the music, the atmosphere is fantastic, you meet people from all over the world especially locals.....My point is that apart from making new friends, you see Singers live instead of on TV and that for me is a day to remember, when you have kids, you just feel on saying i saw Enrique Iglesias twice, Lady Gaga's first MTV concert etc...etc
I hope to see you my friend at the fosos....OH MY APPEAL mr.Government sir, Please get Rock Bands!

That's because eMpTyV viewers are little kids with no knowledge about music. They just follow that music because they are bombared with it everyday on TV, Radios, Adverts etc and they know nothing better. An big record labels rub their hands in glee watching the pack of sheep making them richer.
