Addolorata Cemetery extension plans changed, again
The Health Department is in the final stages of publishing a proposal for a holistic policy on cemeteries, Health Minister Joseph Cassar said in reply to a parliamentary question.
He said that 2,989 new graves are planned to be dug at Addolorata Cemetery. Their sale price still had to be determined and would be published in the Government Gazette.
An extension of the Addolorata has been muted for years. A 2,000 graves extension project was announced before the last election but in November 2009, then Social Policy Minister John Dalli revised the plans and said that a total of 9,000 new graves would be added in a three-year project that was to have seen a €33 million extension, paid for through the sale of the graves. The extension was to have been built on the same neo-gothic lines of the cemetery.
The project, however, had not taken off.
He had said that each new grave would be sold for €8,000 each, an increase of some €3,000 over then prices. Mr Dalli had defended the increase, saying it as in line with an improved service and a more respectful environment.
He also pointed out that because of the scarcity of private graves, some graves were being sold at even higher prices.
The extension was to have covered the back part of the cemetery all the way up to Sta Lucija Road.
There are thousands of pending applications for private graves.

DEFINITELY A TIME TO CONSIDER VERY SERIOUSLY THE EXISTENCE OF A CREMATORIUM. IT IS ABOUT TIME THAT MALTA MOVED WITH THE TIMES. IF WE ARE TRYING TO ATTRACT PEOPLE TO RETIRE TO THE ISLAND WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT THESE GOOD PEOPLE HAVE SOMEWHERE TO GO AFTER THEIR LAST FEW YEARS ON THE ISLAND COME TO AN END. CREMATION IS A HUMANE AND CLEAN WAY OF ENDING ONE'S LIFE IN A CIVILISED MANNER.MOREOVER, A CREMATORIUM TAKES LESS SPACE THAN MORE GRAVES AND IT CAN BE HOUSED WITHIN THE PERIMETER OF THE ADDOLLORATA CEMETERY. LET US ALL TAKE THIS SUGGESTION VERY SERIOUSLY AND AS OVER THE YEARS WE HAVE SEEN 'DUST COMETO DUST' LET US SEE ASHES COME TO ASHES.

Crematorium is the best way, recpect the environmont let us hope that it will not happen the same mistake as had happened in the village of Nadur, when a massive New Cemetery has been constructed on a pure mountain full of water resources.

I agree with a crematorium.... Then they will give you the ashes and you can keep your loved ones in a jar.... no need to go to the cemetery....you can visit the loved one in the comfort of your own home.

In the meantime my relatives ashes await a decent burial. Disgusting, how many more broken promises?. It does seem that protesting by words alone is not enough.

Can we have a day free from some unspecified person waking up in the morning with something new.
Just amazing! One burial site is to be substitute as a changr room, toilet for the artist of the Open Theater, with human remains moved to the side in empty boxes.
Yet, more graves are on the way, at this rate cemeteries are going to be the only tourist attraction.
Then again is this a piece of work with a sturdy profit a kickback to some contractor in the inner circle of the inner circle?
Only in Malta!

Malta is too small to keep on wasting land on cemeteries. Building a crematorium on a fraction of the land would make far more sense a lot more hygienic and dignified than being upended into a box room with other already rotted dead bodies.

I agree with you for a crematorium Mr Barrett, and part of the problem will be solved.

You forgot the cockroaches. They will be feeding on you for months. I agree with you that it more dignified to be burnt.

Agreed...a crematorium is more ideal and better.
Malta is simply too small for all these graves.
