British opera star Margaret Price, one of the world’s leading sopranos, has died at the age of 69 as a result of heart failure, according to her family.
Ms Price died at her home near Cardigan, southwest Wales, her cousin said.
Known for her skill in interpreting the works of Mozart, she performed in many of the world’s most famous opera houses. Price made an acclaimed debut with the Welsh National Opera as Cherubino in Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” in 1962 before becoming famous in the same role at the Royal Opera House the following year.
Her career saw her performing in venues such as New York, Vienna, Paris and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. The Munich Opera honoured her with the title Bayerische Kammersangerin – a German honorific for distinguished singers.
She was knighted for her services to music in 1993, giving her the title Dame Margaret.
She made Munich her home but returned to Wales on her retirement in 1999.
