A fire that broke out in a room at the San Pawl Hotel in St Paul’s Bay was contained before it could spread late last night.

Guests were evacuated as a precaution at about 10 p.m. as staff, assisted by three crews from the Xemxija fire station, battled the blaze on the first floor.

Furniture in the room, which was empty at the time of the incident, was destroyed, but no further damage was reported, sources said. The cause of the fire was unknown at the time of writing.

Guests were allowed to return to their rooms at about 11.35 p.m.
