Dreaming about holidays is the most popular way Britons cope with the winter blues, a new survey has revealed.

Eighty four per cent said they thought about past trips to help them through January, according to a poll of 524 adults carried out by Butlins.

The second happiest memory cheering up respondents on cold, miserable days was attending a party (27 per cent) or going for a walk in the countryside (22 per cent).

Family and friends play a big part in helping to shake off the winter grumps the poll found, with 42 per cent opting to phone or visit their nearest and dearest when feeling down.

Nearly one in three (30 per cent) people gave themselves a boost by heading to the fridge to eat their favourite food.

The survey suggested more than half (56 per cent) of Britons chose planning a holiday as the activity that best lifted their mood.

Remembering the joys of a first kiss, buying a first house or the excitement of being promoted at work each scored less than 10 per cent.
