The Opposition on Tuesday will announce its proposal on the proposed increase in the honoraria to MPs, Labour leader Joseph Muscat said this morning.

Speaking at PL headquarters, Dr Muscat reiterated his opposition to double pay given to ministers. He said this issue was different from the raise to MPs. Ministers had given themselves a raise, they had done so secretly and in a bad time for the country.

The raise for MPs was an afterthought, perhaps to make the ministers' own increases more acceptable.

He said the Labour MPs had reached a common and unified decision on the raise to their honoraria.

They would refuse any increases meant to serve as a carrot to divide them from the people.

Dr Muscat said the PL would present a proposal that was transparent and easy for the people to understand. He could say that the proposal would respect the people and give dignity to MPs.

The proposal would be explained on Tuesday when the House Business Committee is due to meet to discuss MPs' honoaria.
