UHM calls for information campaign against tax evasion
The Union Haddiema Maghqudin has appealed to the government to launch an effective information campaign on the need for everyone to pay their taxes.
It also called on the government to strengthen the structures which combated tax evasion.
The union referred to a recent Parliamentary question during which it was stated that just over 1,000 people declared an income of more than €75,000 a year.
It said it believed this was a conservative figure which raised many questions and doubts.
Tax collection, the UHM said was the duty of every administration to ensure that the government’s expenditure was efficient and continued placing education, health and the social sector as its priorities.

@ Rundolph Spiteri: you forgot to mention the self-employed especially the plasterers, painters, tile layers, etc who never hand out a receipt and hence avoid tax and vat.
Some of these charge 2300 euros a month.

Tax evasion is simply non-existant in cases of people whose tax is directly deducted from their pay chit. What we need to tackle are the lawyers, doctors, specialists and retailers who don't give receipts. How about financial rewards if a citizen exposes a clear case of tax evasion ??

Very well. The UHM could ask the people & we would surely provide them with a long list of tax-evading persons. How about tackling the rampant, black economy? What about some kinds of shops not giving out VAT receipts. I'm tired of hearing the same day in day out. Pawlu Agius is quite right about plastic money but not everybody is able to manage that, I'm afraid It. You can still see queues at banks, post offices, paying W&E bills, the whole lot.

Fine, 1000 pax earning over €75k is fishy. But tell me, isn't a TOTAL figure of 64,249 earning more than €15k way more ridiculous? What this figure says is that 85% of the Maltese population (including students and pensioners) pays between zero and 15% tax, that is a maximum of €1,275 p.a. In other words, these odd 65k workers are paying for all the social requirements of the other 335k!

"The Union Haddiema Maghqudin has appealed to the government to launch an effective information campaign on the need for everyone to pay their taxes."
Is the UHM suggesting that tax evaders acted out of ignorance??!!
Perhaps UHM members would have preferred had the UHM voiced its concerns and protests on the anmesties and concessions which repeatedly granted by successive governments to tax-evaders.

Tax evasion could be easily eliminated if paper money was abolished and all transactions made via credit cards.
