Microsoft has just announced a series of interesting figures for its performance in the retail segment.

Xbox 360 confirmed itself as the number one selling console in the US for the last six months and sales reached over 50 million consoles worldwide. Xbox LIVE has 30 million members and a new member joins every two seconds. The first 60 days saw the sale of eight million Kinect sensors worldwide, a figure which went beyond Microsoft’s forecast.

Microsoft said its Windows 7 continues to be the fastest-selling operating software in history, selling over seven copies a second and now represents 20 percent of all PCs connected to the internet which translates to more than 240 million Windows 7 licenses.

On the web browser front, 20 million Internet Explorer 9 beta downloads have been registered to date.

With regards to its Windows Phone 7, Microsoft announced that phone manufacturers have sold over 1.5 million phones in first six weeks. It’s the only phone that lets you play Xbox LIVE games, delivers Outlook mobile, Internet Explorer mobile and Office mobile, gives you one button access to Bing and so much more. To date there are more than 20,000 developers registered and 60 mobile operators in over 30 countries are carrying Windows Phone 7.

“The mobile space is an incredibly dynamic market. Today’s leaders were not on the map a few years ago and there exists lots of opportunity for innovation and shifts in market positions. We certainly have more work ahead of us,” Microsoft said. With our design, the overall experience of Windows Phone 7 and feedback thus far, we’re on a great path. In fact, all indications suggest that sales are similar to that of other first generation mobile platforms.”

With regards to future plans to use Windows Phone 7 as a platform for slate devices, Microsoft outlined that Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 are optimised for different uses. “Windows 7 delivers a rich PC experience to create and consume content, and supports technologies like digital ink, which we think are a natural for this class of device. Windows Phone 7 was designed specifically for smartphones and we continue to work with partners to offer devices across all categories including phones, slates, laptops, cloud-based services, desktops, gaming machines, all in ones, and so on.”

Microsoft also reiterated its constant focus on securing privacy and tracking consumer behavior online.
