A 49-year-old Italian businessman was shot in the leg in an incident at Papillon cafeteria in busy St Joseph High Road, Hamrun at around 2.30 p.m.

Two armed and hooded men entered the shop and one of them demanded a briefcase which an Italian patron, who was with another two people, was carrying. At least two shots were fired and the men ran out with the bag, which contained gold items. PBS said the value of the haul was some €80,000.

The men escaped in a getaway car where a third man was waiting. The car was found abandoned at nearby Triq il-Vittmi Hamruniz, opposite Maria Assunta School. (See video)
