1,000 declare they earn over €75,000 annually
There were 1,190 people who last year declared that they earned more than €75,000 a year, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech told Parliament.
Answering a question by Anthony Agius Decelis (PL), the minister laid on the Table of the House a breakdown of data showing that 64,249 people declared they earned more than €15,000.

1,267 declared an income of between €40,001 and €45,000; 913 between €45,001 and €50,000; 623 between €50,001 and €55,000; 472 between €55,001 and €60,000; 440 between €60,001 and €65,000; 279 between €65,001 and €70,000; 220 between €65,001 and €75,000 and 1,190 over €75,000.

Here we go again... A while ago we were told that 117 persons earn more that the president and now we are told that 1190 persons earn more that 75,000 euros... Isn't there anything better to discuss in parliament...

If this statistic is valid, and the sampling frame was accurate, I would just wish to point out the misery that this country is in. 63 Thousand people earn 15,000 plus. Lets consider twice that amount for people who don't register taxes (as an exageration) that would be 126 Thousand. So what's with the other people? there is almost 150 thousand earning nothing (exluding children and elderly)

To all those whingeing about about how high earners dodge tax, it should be pointed out that it is not these people that contribute to the government's deficit. It is those who claim welfare when they can easily help themselves. It is those who will not work because it is more comfy for them to be on the dole than to go to work.
In any case, high earners are usually high spenders. And so they still pay a lot in taxes indirectly. Taxing high earners at a higher rate is unjust. Why should they be penalised for their efforts? So can you blame them for doing their best to avoid taxes?
If tax were to be capped, i.e. earning over a certain limit would be tax free, it would be a huge incentive for more people to work harder and create more wealth, but that is anathema to the local ruling socialists. No wonder the world has gone to the dogs.

"It is those who will not work because it is more comfy for them to be on the dole than to go to work."
Sure, since Dr Gonzi is magically creating a lot of jobs, the unemployed don't work out of personal choice, don't they?
"Why should they be penalised for their efforts? So can you blame them for doing their best to avoid taxes? "
Sure, that justifies it all doesn't it? Try to convince the majority of workers that is the case!

We have an expression in Maltese that describes the attitude of those who reason like you, we call it "Ghira bazwija". And yet another apt description of socialism, "Min m'ghandux jghir ghal min ghandu."

Some percentages - Using the NSO statistics of http://www.nso.gov.mt/statdoc/document_file.aspx?id=2933, it shows that there are 146,764 as working population.
Therefore, 60% earn less than Euro 15,000 and the politicians who earn over Euro 75,000 are in the 0.8% of the working population.
People % Wage
82,515 56.2% < 15k

Alot of those 60% are tax evading self employed. The problem is government incompetence in dealing with tax evasion - NOT high salaries

@ M.Sciberras. Rightly so, if the Government has to indulge in the 60% bracket assets, such as costly cars, Speed boats, building equipment, building etc; he can find exactly whether they are correctly declaring their income, but he seems that he don't want to do the work as he should do. Taxes are mostly being collected from employed workers who's taxes are cut at source. Dr.Gonzi wake up and don't let Malta sink as already is showing in that direction.

well, good luck to them.
And if they're working with private organisations or plc's (in particular), then most surely they work hard for that money and/or have lots of responsibility too.

Fabulous! In Malta there must be a very great number of liars, especially amongst those, who can fiddle with their income declarations.

These numbers are probably understated.
If someone is above the 15% tax bracket then he/she probably doesn’t include bank interest earned on which tax is withheld at 15%, on his/her income tax return. This is legal.
Also, if someone has reached the maximum 35% tax bracket, then he/she probably doesn’t include dividends on which tax is withheld at 35%, on his her tax return. This is legal.
Then there are those who don’t declare their income. Obviously illegal.

Removing the number of employed persons and considering the style of living of many of the Maltese these figures are a clearly evidence of the widespread dodging of our tax system.which contributes in no small way Government's deficit.
