Malta champion Daniel Bajada helped his Serie B1 side ASD Fiaccola end their first round commitments on a positive note last weekend following a 5-3 victory over Tenute Zinni Casalbordino ‘Il Sole’ in a league match played at the Istituto Tecnico Commerciale, in Casalbordino.
The Maltese youngster, ranked no. 251 according to the December rankings, got off to a bad start, losing 3-0 to no.57 Li Weimen.
However, Bajada soon rediscovered his winning touch as he hit back with a convincing 3-0 win over Franco Spagnoli and a narrow 3-2 victory over Alessandro Santoro.
Thanks to this win ASD Fiaccola are now joint third in the standings and face leaders Tennistavolo Norbello, of Sardinia, away from home next Saturday.
In the first round, Norbello easily beat Fiaccola 5-1.
Bajada, however, will not be forming part of the Fiaccola team for the next match since he is one of five finalists vying for the Youth Sportsman/woman of the Year Award during Saturday’s SportMalta Awards – l-Għazliet Sportivi Nazzjonali.
The other finalists are Nikki Muscat (swimming), Mark Sammut (swimming), Jeremy Saywell (judo) and Colette Sultana (squash).
